Worn-Down Teeth
Do you have tooth or root notching at the gumline? Do you have sensitive teeth in these areas?
This may be due to Abfraction. Abfraction is a dental condition that involves the loss of tooth structure at the gumline. It is characterized by small, wedge-shaped notches or indentations that appear at the base of the tooth where the enamel meets the gum tissue. Abfraction is believed to result from tooth flexure or bending caused by excessive occlusal (bite) forces.
While the exact cause of abfraction is still a subject of debate among dental professionals, it is commonly associated with tooth clenching or grinding, also known as bruxism. Bruxism involves the involuntary or habitual grinding, gnashing, or clenching of teeth, often during sleep or times of stress.
When a person clenches their teeth, excessive forces are exerted on the teeth, particularly in the cervical (neck) region near the gumline. Over time, these forces can lead to the breakdown of tooth structure, causing abfraction lesions to develop. The constant bending and flexing weaken the enamel and dentin in that area, resulting in the characteristic V-shaped notches.
It's important to note that while tooth clenching is often associated with abfraction, not all abfraction lesions are solely caused by bruxism. Other factors, such as tooth anatomy, occlusal forces, and toothbrush abrasion, may also contribute to the development of abfraction.
If you suspect that you have abfraction or experience tooth clenching, it is recommended to visit your dentist or our dental clinic. We can assess your condition, provide appropriate diagnosis, and suggest treatment options to manage tooth sensitivity and prevent further damage. Treatments for abfraction notches in teeth may include bite adjustments, night guards or bite splints, dental fillings, or addressing underlying factors contributing to tooth clenching.
