Types of Dental Emergencies

  • Close-up of a person with their hand near their mouth, showing lips and part of the face.

    Pain

Tooth or gum pain, sensitivity when biting or to hot/cold, root canal pain, throbbing at night, TMJ or jaw pain.

Dental pain can disturb sleep. We often provide immediate relief so you can consider next steps.

  • Close-up of a person's mouth showing front teeth with noticeable gaps and misalignment.

    Fracture

Fractured or broken teeth, mouth injuries, biting hard objects, loose crowns or bridges, broken dentures, and teeth with previous root canals.

If you have sensitivity, we know you still need a usable smile for daily life. We offer temporary fillings and composite bonding to repair chips.

  • Close-up of human teeth with visible alignment issues and gum inflammation.

    Swelling

Mouth swelling can be caused by root canal pain, abscesses, gum infections, impacted wisdom teeth, tooth sensitivity, or biting injuries.

Swelling may signal a serious problem; a dentist and dental X‑ray can help find the cause and treatment options.

  • Close-up of a person's smile showing missing teeth and uneven, yellowed teeth.

    Loss

Dental injury or accident, tooth loss, crown or bridge loss, implant loss, denture loss, baby or loose teeth, gum disease.

Missing teeth can be replaced temporarily or permanently. If you lose a whole tooth, get to a dental clinic as soon as possible.

Dental Emergency Options

  • Bottle of medicine or supplement with a medical cross label

    Interim

Some dental problems can cause pain and/or infection. Treating those infections and/or pain is our first priority for emergency dental care. We will offer short and long term solutions for dental emergencies.

  • A black and white line drawing of a bear standing on its hind legs, holding a small object in its paws, with a forest scene in the background.

    Fillings

If a tooth is chipped/fractured or a filling is lost/broken, we can make use of white filling material to resolve sensitivity, fix sharp edges and prevent food impaction.

  • A crown being fitted onto a tooth.

    Crowns

If much of a tooth is broken, heavily filled, or has had a root canal, a crown can restore its strength and function. Crowns can be made from porcelain or gold as you prefer.

  • Root Canal Treatment on Tooth Icon.

    Root Canals

If a tooth is infected or painful, a root canal may work if the tooth and root are still intact. We take x‑rays and run tests to check whether the tooth's pulp is alive.

  • Tooth being Removed Icon

    Removals

When a tooth can’t be saved or is badly damaged, the last option is tooth removal (dental extraction). Our dentists can usually do this in the clinic, and in rarer cases refer you to an oral surgeon.
