Reasons Why Teeth Hurt?
-
Cavity
Dental decay or chipped teeth expose the underlying sensitive dentin of a tooth.
Most of the time this type of “cavity” on the surface of a tooth can be felt by the tongue and food can become impacted into the hole.
If left untreated, a cavity can end up affecting the structure and nerve of the tooth.

-
Recession
The gums which cover the roots of teeth can recede due to lack of brushing/flossing, brushing too hard, clenching and grinding of teeth or gum disease.
The exposure of the root surface makes it more prone to temperature sensitivies.
If left untreated, the sensitivity may result in avoidance of hot or cold food items.

Nerve
The pulp or nerve of the tooth can be affected by deep dental decay, crack lines in the tooth and root, deep fillings (as a result of deep decay).
When the pulp of a tooth is irritated it can become sensitive to mild temperature to cold and even hot items.
The pulp of the tooth can die in some circumstances and this can cause discomfort ot pressure.
If left untreated, some conditions related to the pulp of the tooth can require more serious health issues.

Gum & Bone
In some cases, teeth may hurt because of conditions related to the supporting gum and bone which surround teeth.
This can be caused by gum disease, clecnhing/grinding, lack of self oral care and professional cleanings and genetics.
If left untreated and unmaintained, the loss of support from the teeth and bone around teeth can result in looseness of teeth and possible loss of teeth.
