Neuromodulators?
Neuromodulators sound scary but they really are not. A neuromodulator is something that inhibits a nerve impulse. Most commonly we think of dental freezing that is used for short periods of time so that you don’t have discomfort when a dental procedure is performed. A therapeutic neuromodulator, such as Botox or Dysport, are used to relax muscles that cause pain to the jaw joint, result in muscle ache and related tension headaches.
The most common dental cause of these types of pain are due to clenching and/or grinding of teeth during sleep or even during the day. In many cases, patients will rely on over-the-counter or prescription pain medication. These types medications, if used routinely can result in other side effects or adverse reactions. Therapeutic modulators have the potential reduce the routine use of pain medications and provide extended relief.
Therapeutic neuromodulators are injected into the muscles that cause clenching and grinding using a very fine needle. The effect of neuromodulators can last up to 3-4 months in most people. It is essential to seek the professional opinion of a healthcare professional trained to examine head and neck anatomy before pursuing treatment. Our Dentists at Harvest Dental Care are able to diagnose and treat patients with jaw related tension using therapeutic neuromodulators and are ceritifed appropriately by the College of Dental Surgeons of Alberta (CDSA)
